Saturn Sky Key Technology by Generation
1st Generation Base (LE5 Engine)
Your base Sky uses a remote head key with a Philips ID46 (Circle+) transponder chip inside. That chip talks to GM's PK3 (Pass-Key III+) immobilizer every time you turn the ignition. Three buttons on the fob, a standard blade, and CR2032 battery. We program it through the OBD-II port under your dash.
1st Generation Red Line (LF4 Turbo)
Your Red Line has more horsepower, but the key system is identical to the base model. Same Philips ID46 (Circle+) chip, same PK3 immobilizer, same 3-button remote head key. The turbo upgrade did not change anything on the security side, so programming is the same straightforward OBD-II process.
1st Generation Automatic Transmission Variant
Your automatic Sky uses the exact same key setup as the manual. Philips ID46 (Circle+) chip, PK3 (Pass-Key III+) immobilizer, 3-button remote head key with a standard blade. No differences in programming. We verify the PIN code and handle it through OBD-II like every other Sky.
Which Key Does Your Sky Use?
This is the only key type Saturn made for the Sky. It is a single piece with the remote buttons built into the key head and a standard metal blade. The transponder chip inside communicates with your car's immobilizer every time you start it.
The Real Cost of a Saturn Sky Key
Price includes key cutting, transponder programming, and on-site service anywhere in Ventura County.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
When all your keys are lost, the dealer adds a tow bill on top of their already inflated price. We show up and handle it in your driveway.
Common Saturn Sky Key Problems
Transponder Chip Failure
First check when your Sky cranks but will not start: the transponder. The Texas 4D chip in your key can degrade on 2008-2010 models. Mechanical key turns fine, but the PK3 immobilizer does not see a valid signal and kills fuel. We test the chip first.
Fob Battery Drain
Sky owners in Oxnard and Camarillo think the key fob is broken when it is battery drain. Signal interference from nearby electronics depletes the CR2032 faster than normal on 2007-2009 models. Swap the battery first; if drain continues, the internal board may need replacing.
Immobilizer Sync Loss
Classic PK3 sync loss, often after a battery replacement or jump start. The immobilizer loses its handshake with the transponder chip and needs a full relearn cycle. We handle this through OBD-II and have you back on the road in about 30 minutes.
Blade Wear on Ignition
The standard blade on the Sky key wears down the ignition cylinder. On 2009-2010 models the key gets harder to turn or feels loose. A worn blade can also cause intermittent no-starts that mimic transponder failure. We cut a fresh key and test the cylinder.
Can You Program a Saturn Sky Key Yourself?
If you have at least one working key, you can add a new transponder key yourself using GM's on-board procedure. Insert the working key, turn to ON for one second, turn off, then insert the new key and turn to ON. Quick and straightforward.
There is a DIY all-keys-lost procedure that involves three 10-minute-30-second ignition cycles while watching the security light. It works, but the timing has to be exact and it erases all previously programmed keys. If you are not comfortable with the process or the security light does not respond correctly, call us at (805) 790-8162 before you risk locking out the ECU.

Did You Know?
The Saturn Sky shares its Kappa platform and identical key system with the Pontiac Solstice, meaning the two cars use cross-compatible key programming. Both roadsters were built at the same Wilmington, Delaware plant from 2006 to 2010. The European version of the Sky was sold as the Opel GT, making it one of the few American-designed cars to be exported back to Europe under a different badge.
