2007 Saturn SKY
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What is a transponder key and what actually happens when the car reads it?

The key head contains a small chip. When you insert the key and turn it, the ignition coil ring around the cylinder energizes that chip passively, no battery needed. The chip responds with a code. The immobilizer checks that code against what it has stored. If it matches, the engine is allowed to start. If it doesn't match, or if the chip is absent, the car will crank but not fire, or in some cases won't crank at all.

Q: My key broke off inside the ignition. Can you get it out and make a new one on site?

Yes, and it comes up more than people expect on older sports cars that see a lot of use. Extraction first, then a close look at the cylinder. A key that breaks and comes out clean usually leaves the wafers alone. One that gets forced or dug at before someone calls me can bend those internal wafers and cause the cylinder to stick or not return from the start position. I assess that on site.

Q: My SKY cranks fine but won't start and there's a security warning on the dash. Is the transponder the problem?

Cranks-but-won't-fire with a security light is a classic sign the immobilizer didn't read the chip. A few things cause it. The chip itself can fail. The ignition coil ring around the cylinder can go bad and lose the ability to read the key. Or the key was cut to the wrong profile and turns the cylinder without the chip sitting close enough to the reader. Check the obvious first: is the key a copy of a copy?

Q: Can I get a spare key made for the SKY before I lose the one I have?

That is the smartest call you can make with a single-key vehicle. Getting a spare cut and programmed while you still have a working key is faster and often less expensive than an all-keys-lost job. All-keys-lost requires clearing the existing key memory and re-enrolling everything from scratch, which takes longer and needs more from the diagnostic side. Spare-key jobs on GM vehicles from this era are cleaner.

2007 Saturn SKY Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in the East End of Ojai called me on a Tuesday morning. He'd bought the SKY used, got one key with it, and that key snapped right at the shoulder of the blade. Half of it was still in his hand. The other half was somewhere inside the ignition cylinder.

He'd already tried the magnet-on-a-screwdriver approach. I could tell because the break point was a little more chewed up than a clean snap usually looks. No judgment. Everyone tries something first.

I pulled the broken piece out with extraction tools on the hood of his car, right there in his driveway. Once it was clear, I checked the cylinder for damage. The wafers were fine. A snapped key that comes out early usually doesn't have time to do much.

Then I cut a replacement to his vehicle, programmed the transponder chip through the OBD port, and turned it in the ignition myself before handing it over. Fired right up.

He mentioned what the dealer quoted him, more or less in passing. I kept a straight face. He saved a good chunk.

Saturn SKY Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 2007 Saturn SKY key have any remote buttons on it?▼

No. The key for this vehicle is a standalone transponder key with no remote, no lock or unlock buttons, and no fob battery. It is a physical key with a chip embedded in the plastic head. That is the complete unit. If you want remote keyless entry on a SKY, that was a separate fob on its own key ring, not built into the ignition key itself.
