How Saturn Vue Keys Changed Over the Years
First Generation
Saturn stepped things up here with a Passlock II security system managed by the Body Control Module behind the radio. Your Vue uses an ID46 transponder chip in a 3-button remote head key with a standard blade and CR2032 battery. On-board programming keeps things straightforward, but the BCM location means you need someone who knows where to look.
Mid-Cycle Refresh
GM updated the engine options to a 2.4L Ecotec or 3.5L V6, but the security system stayed the same. You still have an ID46 chip, 3-button remote head key, standard blade, and CR2032 battery. The BCM still lives behind the radio, and on-board programming still works for adding keys.
Second Generation
The final generation before Saturn closed its doors. Your 2008-2010 Vue carries the same ID46 transponder chip and 3-button remote head key setup. No push-button start on any Vue, which actually simplifies replacement. On-board programming through OBD-II gets the job done without dealer software.
Which Key Does Your Vue Use?
This is a traditional metal key with buttons built into the head. It has a transponder chip inside that talks to your Vue's security system every time you turn the ignition.
Same key style as the earlier models. Three buttons for lock, unlock, and panic. The chip inside must be programmed to match your specific vehicle before it will start the engine.
The second generation Vue kept the same key format. Standard blade, three buttons, and an ID46 transponder chip that needs professional programming to work with your ignition.
How Much Does a Saturn Vue Key Cost?

Common Saturn Vue Key Problems
Key Fob Battery Depletion
The CR2032 in your Vue remote head key is the most common reason the fob stops locking and unlocking. These last 2-3 years. Pop the fob open with a coin, swap a fresh CR2032. If buttons still do not work, the remote board may need reprogramming.
BCM-Related Security System Faults
Your remote suddenly stops but the mechanical key turns. Points to the BCM, which sits behind the radio. When it acts up it kills keyless entry and triggers false immobilizer lockouts. We access through OBD-II and reprogram on-site, no radio removal.
Transponder Chip Wear
After years of daily use, the ID46 chip signal weakens and your Vue intermittently refuses to start. We test the chip signal strength first before recommending a full replacement, because sometimes a simple reprogram solves it.
Remote Keyless Entry Receiver Module Failure
First check when remote buttons do nothing: the battery. If fresh and reprogramming did not help, the receiver module in the vehicle is the problem. The mechanical key still works so you are not stranded, but convenience is gone until it is fixed.
Can You Program a Saturn Vue Key Yourself?
If you have one working key, you can add a new one yourself using GM's on-board procedure. Insert your working key, turn to ON, wait for the security light to go out, then swap to the new cut key within a few seconds. For all keys lost, you will need the 30-minute relearn procedure or a locksmith with a scan tool.
Same deal as the earlier models. With one working key, insert it, turn to ON for 5 seconds, turn OFF, remove it, and insert the new key within 10 seconds. The security light goes off when it takes. All keys lost? That requires three 10-minute relearn cycles or professional tools.
You can program the remote buttons yourself through the Driver Info Center. Turn the key to ON, press the trip odometer button until RELEARN REMOTE KEY shows up, then hold lock and unlock on the fob for 15 seconds until you hear a horn chirp. This only programs the remote buttons, not the transponder chip.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but the 2002 Saturn Vue was available with either a 2.2L four-cylinder making 143 horsepower or a 3.0L Honda V6 putting out 181 horsepower. That made it one of the few Saturn models ever offered with a V6 option. The Honda engine actually came with different key programming requirements depending on the configuration, which kept things interesting for locksmiths back in the day.
