Got a call from a guy near Camarillo Village Square in Camarillo. His 2008 Saturn VUE was sitting in a parking lot doing that thing where it cranks strong but won't turn over. He said the THEFT SYSTEM light on the instrument cluster was on solid and staying on. He'd already tried waiting ten minutes with the key in the ON position, which is the old Passlock reset trick that floats around Saturn forums. Didn't help. Different system.
When I got there, the key looked rough. The plastic head had a hairline crack running right along the seam where the ID46 transponder chip sits. The chip hadn't fallen out, but it had shifted just enough that the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder couldn't get a clean read. The PK3+ system needs that chip talking back correctly or it kills the fuel injectors. No negotiation.
Cut a fresh B111-PT blank, transferred the programming through the OBD-II port with my tools, and confirmed the new ID46 chip registered to the body control module. Cranked it once, THEFT SYSTEM light flashed and went off the way it should. Whole thing took maybe 25 minutes.
He mentioned the dealer told him they'd need to order the key to VIN and it would be three to five business days before they could even start. He was back on the road before his lunch break ended.
