Over in Village at the Park in Camarillo, I got a call from a VUE owner who said her car would not start and the security light was solid on the dash. She had already replaced the battery in her LHJ011 remote twice thinking that was the issue.
I got there and the remote was working fine. Doors locked, doors unlocked, all three buttons responsive. The problem had nothing to do with the remote.
Her 2003 VUE runs GM's Passlock II system, which is built into the ignition lock cylinder itself. There is a Hall-effect sensor inside the cylinder that reads a small magnet, and when the signal drifts or the sensor gets worn, the BCM sees a mismatch and kills fuel. The security light locks on for exactly ten minutes, then you can try again. She had been doing that relearn cycle by accident, waiting, restarting, and it would work once, then fail the next morning.
I ran the Passlock relearn procedure through the BCM, confirmed the sensor values were holding steady, and programmed her two new remotes while I was there. Tested lock, unlock, and panic on both. Went through three full start cycles cold to make sure the security light stayed off.
She had been quoted a tow plus a full lock cylinder replacement at the dealer. Whole thing took me about 40 minutes in her driveway for a fraction of what they wanted.
