Got a call from a guy in Old Town Camarillo whose 2007 Saturn VUE keys were stolen out of his jacket at a restaurant. Not lost. Stolen. That changes everything.
He already had the car towed home and was sitting in the driveway when I pulled up. First thing he said was, "I don't care about a new key. I care that whoever took mine can't come back tonight and drive off." Fair point.
I plugged into the OBD-II port under the dash and connected to the body control module. On these VUEs, the BCM handles both the PK3+ transponder authentication and the remote keyless entry. I ran a full key reset, which wipes every previously learned key and remote from memory. After that, the stolen keys are just chunks of metal and plastic. They will turn the ignition, but the immobilizer kills the fuel injectors. The car cranks and does nothing.
Then I cut a new key blade, programmed the PK3+ transponder chip, and paired a fresh LHJ011 remote. Lock, unlock, hatch. Tested each one walking around the car. He wanted a spare, so I did both in the same session since the BCM learn procedure is already open.
He watched the whole thing from about two feet away. When I handed him the keys, he locked it three times in a row. I get it.
Took about 40 minutes. He kept the tow receipt and asked what the dealer would have charged. I just said it would have been a lot more and left it at that.
