2005 Saturn VUE
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: I found the factory FCC ID printed on the back of my fob. Does that matter for getting a replacement?

Yes, and it's worth checking before you buy anything. The FCC ID tells me exactly which fob shell and electronics match your VUE. There were a few different part numbers floating around for the 2005 model, and using the wrong one means the fob either won't pair or won't have the right frequency. When you call, read me that code off the back of your existing fob if you still have it.

Q: How does your price compare to the dealer for a 2005 Saturn VUE key replacement?

Way less, and I come to you. The dealer price on these includes the key, programming, and whatever their shop rate is that day. Mine includes the key, cutting, programming, and I'm in your driveway or parking lot in Village at the Park. Call for the exact number, but it won't be close to what the dealer wants.

Q: My 2005 VUE fob stopped working but the key still starts the car. What's going on?

That's actually a useful clue. On the VUE, the remote functions and the ignition/start system run independently. If the car starts fine but the lock and unlock buttons on the fob do nothing, the issue is almost always the fob itself, either a dead CR2032, a cracked solder joint inside the fob from being dropped, or a failed fob that needs replacing. It's not an immobilizer problem, and it doesn't mean the car suddenly stopped recognizing your key.

Q: Can I program a second key myself on a 2005 Saturn VUE if I still have one working key?

Not on these. Some older GM vehicles had an onboard self-programming sequence for the remote portion, but the transponder side of the 2005 VUE requires a scan tool regardless of how many working keys you already have. There's no ignition-turn trick that covers the full job. If you've seen a procedure posted online that claims otherwise, it may only be addressing the fob's remote functions on a different year or a different GM model.

2005 Saturn VUE Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Village at the Park in Camarillo, I got a call from a guy who had been locked out of his 2005 VUE since the night before. He had tried everything he could find on a forum: ignition cycling, door-lock tricks, none of it worked. By the time he called me he was already frustrated and half-convinced the car was going to need a tow to a dealer.

I pulled up, got the door open without touching the paint, and decoded the lock right there at the driver's side. Cut a fresh key on the machine in the van while he watched.

Then came the OBD side. These GMT330-platform VUEs need a scan tool for all-keys-lost, no way around it. Connected up, ran the procedure, and the car started on the first try. I cut a second key while we were already set up, because losing your only key twice is a lesson most people only want to learn once.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait time of a few days just to get an appointment, on top of a tow. I was there, done, and gone before lunch. He drives away with two working keys, both fob and blade confirmed, standing in his own parking lot.

Saturn VUE Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What battery does the 2005 Saturn VUE key fob use?▼

CR2032. It's a flat, coin-style cell you can grab at any auto parts store or pharmacy. When the battery gets low, you'll usually notice the range shrinking before it dies completely, so if you're having to get close to the car for the fob to respond, the battery is the first thing to rule out. When I make a replacement key, a fresh CR2032 goes in before I hand it over.
