2009 Saturn SKY
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2009 Saturn SKY Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone up in Upper Ojai, out past the orange groves where the road starts climbing and the cell signal gets spotty. She had a 2009 Saturn SKY sitting in her driveway that wouldn't start. The engine would crank fine, then cut out immediately. She thought it was a fuel pump issue and had already spent time on the phone with a mechanic about that.

I asked her one question: does a security light or warning indicator stay on or flash after the crank? She went out, tried it, called me back. Yes, it was doing exactly that.

That changed the whole picture. The engine cranking but not catching, combined with that warning, is the immobilizer doing its job and rejecting the key. Her original key had a crack running right through the plastic head, and the chip inside had been compromised. The car was reading it as an unknown key.

I drove up to her in my van, decoded the ignition cylinder, cut a fresh key to match, and programmed the new transponder through the diagnostic port. First turn, it fired right up and stayed running. No stall, no warning light.

She had already been quoted a tow plus a dealer appointment that was days out. The whole thing was done in her driveway in about an hour, for a fraction of what the dealer route would have cost her.
