Got a call from a guy out near the Ojai Meadows Preserve who had a 2009 Saturn SKY sitting dead in his driveway. No keys at all. He had bought it secondhand a few months back with one key, and that key just vanished. Gone.
He had already called around. The Saturn brand is defunct, so his first instinct was a GM dealer. They told him they could order the key but would need the car towed in, and the whole thing would take over a week because the SKY is a low-volume orphan model and they don't stock Kappa platform parts. He sounded tired of the runaround before I even got there.
I pulled up, verified the VIN, and got to work. The SKY runs GM's PK3+ immobilizer through the Body Control Module. On an all-keys-lost, you reset the BCM's learned key data through the OBD-II port, then write the new transponder ID. Cut the key to code using Strattec 5912545 blank, programmed the Megamos chip, and let the security relearn cycle finish. The whole thing took maybe 35 minutes.
He sat on his front step watching. When the engine turned over, he just kind of nodded slowly, like he had been bracing for a much worse outcome.
