Got a call from a guy up near Wheeler Hot Springs in Ojai. He had a 2008 Saturn SKY, the turbo Redline, parked at the end of his driveway with zero keys. His only key had snapped in the ignition cylinder a week earlier, and he had been calling around since.
Two dealers told him Saturn parts were discontinued and they could not help. One suggested a tow to a GM dealer in Ventura for diagnosis first, then ordering a key, then another appointment to program it. He said the whole thing sounded like it would take a week and cost more than the car's trade-in value. He was not wrong.
I pulled up, decoded the lock cylinder on the door, and cut a new key blank on my portable machine right on his driveway. The SKY uses the PK3+ immobilizer with a Megamos ID 13 chip, so I programmed the transponder through the OBD-II port using the security relearn procedure. The whole thing has a ten-minute countdown timer built into the process where you just sit and wait for the body control module to cycle.
While that timer ran, he told me he bought the car new in 2008 right before Saturn folded. Thirteen years with one key. Never made a spare.
Key turned, engine fired, SECURITY light cleared off the dash. He just nodded. I think he expected it to be harder than that.
