I got a call from a guy parked near the shops in Midtown Ventura. He'd been locked out for a couple of hours and was starting to think his whole day was gone.

His only key had snapped at the base, right where the blade meets the head. Classic break point on these, especially when the key has some age on it and the ignition cylinder has gotten a little stiff over the years. Half the blade was sitting in his pocket. The other half was still in the door lock.

I carry the right extraction tools for exactly this. Got the broken piece out of the lock without any drama, decoded the cut from it right there on the hood, and put together a new key on the portable machine. Then came the programming step through the OBD port to get the transponder enrolled.

He watched the whole thing from about three feet away, which I actually prefer. No mystery, no "just trust me." He could see what was happening and why.

Total time from when I pulled up to when he drove off was under 40 minutes. He mentioned he'd called the dealer first and they told him to have it towed in and plan on waiting a few days for a key blank to come in. For a guy who needed to be somewhere that afternoon, that wasn't going to work. What I charged him was a fraction of what they quoted, and he had his car back the same morning.

Does the 2007 Pontiac G6 key fob have a battery, and does the remote need to be replaced at the same time as the key?▼

The transponder key and the remote fob are two separate items on this vehicle. The key itself has no battery. It carries a passive transponder chip that gets its signal from a coil around the ignition cylinder, no battery required on the key side. The fob, if you have one, is a standalone remote and does use a battery. But the fob only handles door locks. It has nothing to do with starting the car.
