2003 Pontiac Sunfire
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2003 Pontiac Sunfire Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Wilson, I got a call from a guy who had been carrying a fob that barely worked for months. He'd hold it two inches from the door handle and it might lock, might not. He'd given up on unlock entirely and was just using the key in the door every time.

He figured it was the fob, bought a replacement online, and then found out it needed programming. That's when he called me.

I pulled up to his place in the late afternoon. He handed me both fobs, the old one and the new one still in the packaging. Before I even touched the new one, I opened the old fob on my tailgate. CR2032 inside, but it had been sitting crooked and the positive clip had a slight outward bow. The battery wasn't making solid contact. I straightened the clip, reseated the battery, and tested range. That old fob went from two inches to a normal distance across the parking lot.

He didn't actually need the new fob programmed that day. But we talked through it anyway. I showed him what the programming process looks like through the OBD port, what it takes to add a second fob, and why all-keys-lost on the ignition side is a different job from just adding a remote.

He kept both fobs. Smart move for a car this age. The dealer quote he'd gotten was for the whole job done their way, their timeline. He saved a good chunk just by calling me first instead of last.
