1996 Pontiac Sunfire
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can a locksmith make a key for my 1996 Sunfire without the original?

Yes, and it is a common call. Two ways to do it: pull the key code from VIN records if the dealer or a locksmith database has it on file, or decode the lock cylinder directly. Either way gets us to the correct cut without needing the original key in hand. No tow required.

Q: Do I need to go to the dealer to get a replacement key for my 1996 Pontiac Sunfire?

Not at all. We come to you. Home, work, parking lot, roadside near Mussel Shoals, wherever the car is. The equipment that cuts a key for this vehicle fits in a mobile unit just fine. There is no reason to tow a car somewhere or wait days for a metal key replacement.

Q: My 1996 Sunfire key turns but the ignition feels loose or grindy. Do I need a new key or something else?

Worn ignition cylinders are a real thing on cars this age. If the key turns but feels rough, catches, or only works in certain positions, the issue is usually the cylinder itself wearing out from years of use, not the key blank. A badly worn key can accelerate that wear, so getting a cleanly cut replacement is a good first step.

Q: I only have one key for my 96 Sunfire. Should I get a spare made now or wait until I need one?

Get the spare now. A key cut while you still have the original is the easiest version of this job. Lose the last one and the process gets a little longer because we work from the lock instead of the key. Not a big deal, but simpler when you have something to copy. A car this age only gets one chance at the easy version.

1996 Pontiac Sunfire Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone parked near Mussel Shoals, right off the 101. Broke off her only key in the door lock and was not having a great afternoon.

She had already called the dealer. They told her to tow it in and come back in a few days. That was a hard no for her. The car was sitting, she had places to be, and a tow plus dealer fees on a 96 Sunfire felt like a bad joke.

I drove out there. The broken piece was still in the lock, so I extracted it first, then decoded the lock cylinder to get the cut. From there it was just cutting a fresh key blank to match. The whole thing took maybe twenty minutes on site.

She turned the key, car started, doors worked. She asked when I needed to connect to the computer. I told her this one does not need that. Metal key, cut to the lock, done.

She saved a good chunk compared to the dealer route, and she did not lose her car for three days over it.

Pontiac Sunfire Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 1996 Pontiac Sunfire key have a fob or remote?▼

No. The 1996 Sunfire uses a straight metal key with no remote, no fob, and no battery to worry about. Lock and unlock is handled at the door with the key itself. If someone sold you a fob or told you one comes with the car, that is not accurate for this year and this setup.
