I was out in Windsor North/River Ridge on a Tuesday afternoon when a guy flagged me down, almost literally. He had walked out to his parking spot and his 2004 Sunfire was just sitting there, locked, and his fob had stopped responding entirely. Not weak signal, not intermittent. Nothing. He had already done the battery swap with a fresh CR2032 from a drugstore and it still did nothing.
He thought he needed a whole new fob programmed. He had already called the dealer and was bracing for the wait and the bill.
I pulled out a known-good fob blank and we ran through the onboard programming sequence right there in the parking lot. The Sunfire has a built-in routine for this, you do not need a laptop or a scan tool to get a remote paired. Took maybe ten minutes once I had everything out. Buttons worked, range was solid, lock and unlock confirmed on all four.
Then I handed it back and asked him to show me what his old fob was doing. He pressed it once and it worked. The issue was a battery contact that had a tiny bit of corrosion under it. The replacement battery made intermittent contact but not reliable contact. We cleaned it, seated the CR2032 properly, and now he had two working fobs.
He had expected a dealer appointment, a parts order, and a number that would make him wince. Instead he was back upstairs in under twenty minutes. That is usually how the Sunfire call goes out here.
