Got a call from a guy near Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard. His 2004 Sunfire wouldn't start, and his remote had quit doing anything a week prior. He figured the two problems were connected. They weren't.
When I pulled up, he had the hood popped like someone told him to check a fuse. I sat in the driver's seat, turned the key, and watched the THEFT SYSTEM light stay solid on the cluster. Classic Passlock II lockout. The ignition lock cylinder's internal sensor had gone flaky, which is a known weak spot on these J-body GMs. The car was cranking fine, just no fuel.
I ran the three-cycle relearn right there. Key to ON, wait for the security light to drop after ten minutes, key off, repeat. While the car sat doing its thing, I cracked open his KOBUT1BT remote on the hood. The CR2032 was corroded and one of the battery contacts had green buildup on it. Cleaned the contact, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and used the on-board programming sequence to re-pair it. Hold lock and unlock together, GM chime confirms, done.
After the third Passlock cycle, the Sunfire fired right up. He just sat there staring at the dash like it owed him an apology.
Two separate problems, one visit, no tow truck, no dealer waiting room. He went back inside and I packed up the van.
