Got a call from a guy near the Oxnard Transit Center. His 2000 Sunfire wouldn't start, SECURITY light glowing on the dash, and his only remote had quit locking the doors a week before. He figured the two problems were connected. Most people do.
They are not.
I got there and checked the remote first. Popped the KOBUT1BT open and the CR2032 was corroded on one side, green crust on the negative contact. Cleaned it, dropped in a fresh battery, and the four buttons came back to life: lock, unlock, trunk, panic. That part took two minutes.
The no-start was PASS-Lock II. The hall-effect sensor inside the ignition lock cylinder was sending a bad resistance reading to the body control module. The BCM saw a mismatch and killed the fuel injectors. Classic GM anti-theft from that era. The SECURITY light was the tell. I ran the relearn procedure, which involves a timed 10-minute key-on cycle, sometimes three rounds of it, while the BCM resets its stored value. Not glamorous. A lot of sitting on the hood waiting.
He kept glancing at the remote like it was going to stop working again. I told him the remote and the starting system are two totally different circuits. Once that clicked for him, he relaxed.
Whole visit ran about 40 minutes. He drove home without a tow, without a dealer appointment, and for a fraction of what the dealer quoted him over the phone.
