How Cobalt Key Security Evolved
1st Generation (Early)
A standard transponder key with a Philips Crypto 2 (ID46, PCF7936) chip inside the head. Your Cobalt's PK3+ immobilizer reads that chip every time you turn the ignition. If the chip does not match, the engine will not start, even though the blade turns the cylinder just fine.
1st Generation (Mid)
A Philips Crypto 2 (ID46) transponder key, same as the earlier years, with the same PK3+ system running behind the scenes. GM kept the security architecture identical on the Delta platform. The 3-button remote handles lock, unlock, and panic, and the transponder chip handles starting.
1st Generation (Late)
A Philips Crypto 2 (ID46, PCF7936) transponder key rounds out the final Cobalt production years. No smart key, no push-button start, no changes to the immobilizer. PK3+ stayed consistent all the way through 2010, which makes these straightforward for us to program on-site.
Which Key Does Your Cobalt Use?
A standard metal blade key with a transponder chip in the plastic head. The remote portion handles your door cylinders; the chip inside handles starting the engine.
Same key style as the earlier Cobalts. Standard blade, Philips Crypto 2 (ID46) chip, 3-button remote. If you have an SS model, the key is identical to the base trim.
Final production years, same key. Standard blade with a transponder chip embedded in the head and a 3-button remote for keyless entry.

Common Cobalt Key Problems
Transponder Key Failure
Dash lights but no crank, security light flashing or solid: on 2005-2010 Cobalts the Texas 4D chip wears out, and once PASS-Key III+ cannot read it the car treats the key like a stranger. We test on-site and cut and program a replacement in 20 minutes.
Immobilizer Sync Loss
Usually a battery disconnect or failed DIY programming. The PASS-Key III+ system on your 2007-2010 Cobalt drops its handshake, security light flashes, no start. We run a full BCM relearn to sync the existing key, or program a new one if the chip is dead.
Worn Ignition Cylinder
First check on a high-mileage 2005-2008 Cobalt: the cylinder itself. Tumblers wear, key gets hard to insert or will not turn. Sometimes feels like grinding. Mechanical, not electrical. We diagnose on-site in Simi Valley, Oxnard, or wherever you are.
Can You Program a Cobalt Key Yourself?
If you have one working transponder key, you can add another using GM's on-board relearn procedure. Insert the working key, turn to ON for one second, turn off, and repeat. This only works for adding a key; if all keys are lost, you need professional tools.
GM built a 30-minute relearn into these years. You insert the new cut key, turn to ON for 10 minutes and 30 seconds until the security light goes out, then repeat the cycle two more times. It works, but the timing is critical, and if you get it wrong, you risk locking out the ECU. At that point you are looking at a dealer ECU reset.
The remote buttons can be paired separately. Close all doors, press and hold the lock and unlock buttons on the driver door panel simultaneously for 6 seconds, then release. This only programs the lock and unlock functions; the transponder chip still needs to be programmed separately.

Did You Know?
Most people do not know this: the Chevrolet Cobalt SS, with its turbocharged engine pushing over 260 horsepower, used the exact same PASS-Key III+ immobilizer system as the base model Cobalt. GM did not bother upgrading the security hardware for the performance variant. The same transponder chip that protected a 155-horsepower commuter car also guarded one of the quickest front-wheel-drive cars of its era.
