Out in Meiners Oaks, a guy flagged me down after calling from his driveway off Eucalyptus. He had one key left for his 2007 Cobalt and his wife had taken the other one on a trip. He wanted a spare made before she got back, partly practical, partly because she'd been telling him to do it for two years.
The Cobalt's transponder key looks like a regular metal key but the chip inside is what the car actually cares about. Cutting the blade is step one. Getting the car to accept it is step two, and they're not the same thing. A hardware store can do step one. They can't do step two.
He had his working key with him, which made everything cleaner. I cut the new blade to match, connected to the OBD port, and ran the add-a-key procedure with his original present. The car learned the new key. I pulled the original, tested the new one cold in the ignition, and it fired right up.
He asked if he should get a third made while I was there. Honestly, not a bad idea on a car this age. Parts are still findable, but having a backup to the backup on an older daily driver is just smart. He passed on it that day. His call.
The whole thing was done before his neighbor finished washing his truck across the street.
