How Impala Keys Changed Over 25 Years
6th Gen (B-body)
This is where security got serious. Just kidding. It didn't. Your 1995 or 1996 Impala uses a purely mechanical key with no chip, no transponder, and no electronic security at all. It is a simple metal key that we cut on the spot, and there is nothing to program.
7th Gen (W-body)
GM rolled out Passlock on the W-body Impala starting in 2000. Your key is a plain metal blade with no transponder chip. Security lives in the lock cylinder, where a Hall-effect sensor reads a coded magnet as the key turns. We cut by code, and run a 10-minute Passlock relearn when needed.
8th Gen (W-body Refresh)
A remote head key with the buttons built right into the key instead of a separate fob. Uses a CR2032 battery and a Philips Crypto 2 (ID46) transponder chip with GM's PK3+ immobilizer. On-board programming with a working key, or PIN-based all-keys-lost through OBD-II.
10th Gen (Epsilon II)
This is where security got serious for real. Your Impala switched to a smart proximity key with a laser-cut blade and push-button start on LTZ and Premier trims. Programming requires server authentication through GM's network. No DIY option here, but we handle it on-site with our Autel IM608 and the proper server access.
Which Key Does Your Impala Use?
A plain metal key with no chip and no buttons. We cut it on the spot from your door or ignition code. Simple as it gets.
Standard blade with a separate or integrated 3-button remote. No transponder chip in the key on these years; Passlock handles immobilization through the ignition cylinder. The remote programs separately.
The remote buttons are built into the key head. Uses a CR2032 battery for the remote functions and a transponder chip for starting.
A proximity fob with push-button start and a hidden laser-cut emergency blade inside. Stays in your pocket to unlock and start the car.

Common Impala Key Problems
Transponder Key Programming Failures (2000-2005)
The GM PassLock system on early W-body Impalas is finicky about new transponder keys. On-board programming often fails the first try with aftermarket blanks. We carry the right chip types and use OBD-II diagnostics to nail it in Oxnard or Camarillo driveway.
Remote Head Key Fob Battery Drain (2006-2013)
First check: the battery. Your 2006-2013 Impala remote eats CR2032s faster than it should, sometimes dying in 12 months. Pop a fresh battery in. If it keeps coming back, the fob's board may be drawing power, and that is when you call us.
Smart Key Authentication Failures (2014-2020)
Your 2014-2020 Impala proximity key suddenly stops being recognized. Not always a dead battery. The smart key system sometimes loses server-side registration. We re-sync to your ECU using GM server auth in Thousand Oaks or Simi Valley.
Mechanical Key Wear (1994-1996)
Owners think the ignition is failing when the culprit is a worn key. The 6th gen B-body Impala has no electronic security, so the mechanical key and cylinder do all the work. We cut a fresh key from the original code, not from your worn copy.
Can You Program an Impala Key Yourself?
No programming needed. This generation uses a plain mechanical key with no chip. You just need it cut to the right code.
Yes, if you have one working key. Insert it, turn to ON, wait 10 minutes for the security light to go off, then repeat with the new key. It takes about 20 minutes of patience. All keys lost requires professional tools.
Remote functions can be programmed through the dash menu. Transponder programming works with the same 10-minute relearn if you have a working key. All keys lost requires a 30-minute triple-cycle relearn or professional OBD tools.
No DIY option. The proximity key system requires GM server authentication and professional programming tools. Call us at (805) 790-8162 and we handle it on-site.

Did You Know?
The 1995 Chevrolet Impala SS marked the return of the Super Sport nameplate after a 27-year hiatus, the last one being the 1969 model. It packed a 260 hp 5.7L V8 and became an instant icon in the lowrider and street racing communities, yet it rolled off the line with completely mechanical keys and zero electronic security. Sometimes the classics keep it simple.
