A guy near the Carpinteria Seal Sanctuary flagged me down, sort of. He'd called while I was already finishing a job in Carpinteria, so I was ten minutes out.
His 2007 Impala was sitting in a lot off Carpinteria Avenue. One key, snapped right at the bow where the plastic meets the blade. He'd been wiggling it for weeks and the plastic finally gave. Then I connected to the OBD-II port and ran the security relearn through the Body Control Module. The BCM on these ninth-gen Impalas handles all the immobilizer logic, so once the new key's ID 13 chip registers, the THEFT SYSTEM light on the dash cycles off and stays off.
Tested ignition, tested the spare he still had that was working. Both keys recognized. Done.
He told me the dealer had quoted him days of wait time and wanted the car towed in. He'd been driving around on a cracked key because he couldn't afford to be without the car that long. Whole thing took me about 25 minutes in the parking lot.
