Saturday night in Carpinteria, close to the Bluffs Nature Preserve, a couple came out of the bowling alley and their 2009 Impala just sat there. Key turned, engine cranked, but it would not start. The DIC showed "Service Theft Deterrent System" and the security light was solid on.
They tried the other key. Same thing. Both PK3+ transponder keys had been working that morning.
One of them searched for a Chevy locksmith and I picked up. I was about 15 minutes out and already had Strattec 5911562 blanks and ID 13 chips in the van.
When I got there, I plugged into the DLC and pulled the BCM. The transponder in the primary key was actually reading fine. Turns out the security relearn had tripped, probably from a weak battery voltage dip while they were inside. The Impala's Theftlock system is sensitive to that. I ran a 30-minute security relearn through the BCM to re-sync the existing keys, then cut and programmed a fresh spare on the B111 profile so they'd have a backup.
Both original keys started the car clean. New spare worked on the first turn. The wife said she'd been about to call a tow to leave it there until Monday when a dealer could look at it.
They drove home that night. No tow bill, no dealer wait, no Monday morning phone tag with a service advisor.
