How Chevrolet Spark Keys Changed Over the Years
Basic Transponder Key
Security is straightforward on these early Sparks. Your key is a simple transponder blade with a Philips Crypto 2 (ID46, PCF7937A) chip inside, no remote buttons, no fob battery to worry about. The PK3+ immobilizer reads the chip through the ignition cylinder, and we program it through your OBD-II port in about 15 minutes.
Remote Head Key Arrives
Chevrolet added an integrated remote head key on higher trims, giving you lock, unlock, and trunk buttons built right into the key. The chip is still a Philips Crypto 2 (ID46, PCF7937A) running PK3+, so the security side did not change. The big difference for you is a CR2032 battery inside the fob housing that you will need to replace every couple of years.
Enhanced Passlock Era
This is where security got a small bump. Your Spark continues with a Hitag 2 Extended (ID46E) chip, which tightened up the encryption compared to earlier years. Programming still goes through OBD-II, and on-board procedures work for adding keys when you have a working one. We read the PIN with our Autel IM608 and handle the whole thing on-site.
Which Key Does Your Spark Use?
A plain metal key with a chip hidden inside the plastic head. No buttons, no battery. You turn it in the ignition and the chip does the rest.
Looks like a regular key but has lock, unlock, and trunk buttons built into the head. Uses a CR2032 battery for the remote functions.
Same layout as the 2016-2018 key with three buttons and a CR2032 battery, but the internal chip runs upgraded encryption. Looks identical from the outside.
Pricing by Generation
Every price includes the key blank, cutting, transponder programming, and testing, all done at your location.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
Your Spark key costs about half what the dealer charges. Here is the breakdown.
Common Chevrolet Spark Key Problems
Passlock Sensor Failure
The Passlock II sensor in the cylinder wears out, especially on 2013-2018 Sparks. Security light on, engine will not start even with a good key. We diagnose on-site in Oxnard or Camarillo and either replace the cylinder or bypass.
Transponder Chip Recognition Loss
First check when your Spark cranks but will not fire: did the ECM lose its transponder memory? Common after a dead battery or jump. A quick OBD-II relearn resyncs your existing key to the computer, under 20 minutes.
Key Fob Battery Drain
Your 2016-2022 Spark remote eats CR2032s faster than expected, especially if buttons get pressed in a bag. Range shrinks before it dies. Pop the fob with a coin, drop a fresh CR2032 positive-side down, and you are good.
Immobilizer ECM Glitch
2019-2022 Spark owners blame the key when the real problem is an ECM glitch from a weak battery. Security system locks you out randomly, and a new key will not fix it. The fix is a 30-minute OBD-II relearn that resets the immobilizer.
Can You Program a Spark Key Yourself?
If you have one working key, you can add a new one yourself using the quick add-key procedure: insert the working key, turn to ON, turn off, then insert the new key within 5 seconds and turn to ON. If all keys are lost, the 10-minute relearn procedure works but requires precise timing across three 10-minute cycles. Most people call us after the second failed attempt.
You can add a key if you have one working key using the same quick swap method. Insert the programmed key, turn to ON, turn off, insert the new key within 5 seconds. No confirmed DIY procedure for all keys lost on these years, so if you have zero working keys, you will need professional tools.
Same add-key procedure works here with one existing key. The Enhanced Passlock encryption means all-keys-lost situations need professional OBD-II equipment. Have your registration or title handy and know your exact year when you call us at (805) 790-8162.

Did You Know?
The Chevrolet Spark's Passlock II system, inherited from GM economy cars, uses resistive ignition cylinder sensors rather than RFID transponders in early models. That makes it one of the last GM vehicles to use this analog immobilizer technology. While most of the industry moved to radio frequency transponder chips years earlier, GM kept the resistor-based system alive in the Spark well into the 2010s.
