Near Simi Valley Hospital, a guy flagged me down at the community center. He'd already paid another locksmith for a replacement smart key on his 2019 Chevrolet Spark, but the car would crank for about two seconds and then cut fuel. Classic immobilizer rejection. The previous tech told him the body control module was bad and left.
The module was fine. This was a locksmith problem, not a module problem.
GM's PEPs security system on the fourth-gen Spark requires a full relearn procedure through the BCM, and that includes a timed security countdown. On these, if you rush the learn or interrupt the timer, the BCM writes the key data temporarily but never commits it. The car sees the fob, cranks, then the theft deterrent module kills the injectors. You'll get a "Service Theft Deterrent System" message on the DIC and it just sits there.
I connected through OBD-II with my IM608, cleared the incomplete key data from the BCM, and ran a clean relearn with the full timer. His HYQ4AA fob with the Hitag2 chip registered permanently. I confirmed it on screen, then tested push-button start, passive entry on both front doors, and remote start from 50 feet out. All five buttons.
He'd already paid the first guy, and I couldn't fix that part. But the Spark started on the first press and stayed running. That's the part I could fix.
