A call came in from a parking structure off the 101 near Camarillo, Spanish Hills side, around 9 at night. Guy had his only key to his 2021 Spark and it just stopped working. Doors would not respond, the start button was giving him a key-not-detected warning, and he was starting to spiral about tow trucks and overnight fees.
I walked him through finding his VIN first. He had no idea where it was. I told him: lower corner of the windshield, driver's side, look through the glass from outside. He found it. When I got there, first thing I did was pull the CR2032 out of his fob and check it. It was reading low. Not dead, but not healthy either. On a smart key setup like this, a weak battery does not always kill the fob cleanly. It just makes everything unreliable in a way that feels like a bigger problem than it is. Fresh battery, proper contact seating, and I retested all four buttons and both door handles right there under the parking structure lights.
The fob came back. Not a full replacement job that night, just a battery and a proper seat. He drove home.
The dealer would have had him tow it in the next morning and probably quoted a full fob replacement before anyone looked at the battery contacts. That is the part that gets me every time.
