Over in Simi Valley, near the Santa Susana Depot Museum, a woman called me around 7pm. She had just left urgent care with her kid and a bag of prescriptions on the back seat. The 2018 Spark would not start. She pressed the button, got "No Key Detected" on the dash, and the fob was completely unresponsive.
She tried holding the fob against the start button, which is the backup procedure GM lists in the owner's manual. Still nothing. Dealer was already closed for the night.
I was about 20 minutes out. Got there, opened the door, and plugged my IM608 into the OBD port. The HYQ4AA fob had a dead CR2032, but that alone should not have killed the backup start. Popped the fob open on the hood and found the internal antenna lead had a loose solder point, probably from being dropped on pavement at some point. The pad on the little board was cracked just enough to break contact.
Replaced the fob with a new unit, part number 13584500, programmed it through the diagnostic port, and tested all five buttons plus passive entry on both front doors and the hatch. Then I walked her through the backup start procedure so she would know it for next time with a working fob.
Phone call to engine running was about 50 minutes. She made it to the pharmacy with time to spare. The dealer would have been tomorrow at the earliest.
