A real locksmith tells you one price before the work starts. If someone quotes you a base rate and then starts adding programming fees, security relearn fees, or any other line item that wasn't mentioned upfront, that's your sign. If you replace the fob, the new one has to be programmed to your specific car using diagnostic equipment. A blank you buy online won't do anything until it's enrolled.

For a 2016 Spark smart key, the programming process goes through the OBD port and the tool communicates directly with the body control module to register new fobs. It's not a button sequence or an ignition trick. Those onboard relearn cycles exist on older GM vehicles with blade-style transponder keys, but a smart key system like this one requires the equipment to talk to the car's electronics.

If you already have a working fob, adding a second one is faster than an all-keys-lost job. All-keys-lost wipes the existing key memory and re-registers from scratch, which takes longer because of built-in timed cycles in the software. Either way, I carry what's needed for both scenarios.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2016 Spark. Can you just program it, or do I need to buy one from you?

If the fob you bought is a quality aftermarket unit with the correct factory FCC ID on the label, there's a reasonable chance I can program it. Bring it when you call me out and I'll check it before I start. The issue with some online fobs is that the internal components don't always meet the spec the car expects, and a fob that looks right on the outside can fail during enrollment.

If it doesn't take, you're not out the programming fee. I'll tell you upfront what I can and can't do with a customer-supplied part before I charge you anything for the attempt.

My 2016 Spark starts fine with the fob inside the car but the door handles stopped responding. Is the fob failing?

Probably not the fob. If the push-button start is still reading the key normally, the fob is communicating. Passive door handle entry and the start system use different antennas, and the door-side antenna or handle sensor is often the weak point.

Start with the basics. Clean around the handles. Check if it's both doors or just one. If it's one door consistently, that narrows it to that door's hardware. If it's both, the fob battery could be marginal enough to lose range but still work at close range inside the car. Swap the CR2032 first and retest. If both handles are still dead after a fresh battery, give me a call and we'll sort out whether it's the key or the car.
