How Monte Carlo Keys Changed Over the Years
Fifth Generation (Lumina Platform)
Your first-gen Monte Carlo uses a plain mechanical key with no transponder chip at all. There is no immobilizer system to worry about. We cut a standard double-sided wafer key and you are on your way.
Sixth Generation (Early Impala Platform)
Your 2000-2002 Monte Carlo runs GM's Passlock anti-theft system. There is no transponder chip in the key on these years; the security lives in the ignition cylinder, where a Hall-effect sensor reads a coded magnet as the key turns. We cut by code and run the Passlock relearn on-board in your driveway.
Sixth Generation (PK3+ Remote Head)
Your 2003-2005 Monte Carlo stepped up to a remote head key with a 3-button integrated remote, but security is still GM's Passlock system, not a transponder chip. The remote programs separately, and we handle the Passlock relearn on-site.
Sixth Generation (Final PK3+)
Your 2006-2007 Monte Carlo introduces a Philips Crypto 2 (ID46) transponder chip in the 3-button remote head key. PK3+ immobilizer, OBD-II PIN-based programming for all-keys-lost. SS models use the same key system.
Which Key Does Your Monte Carlo Use?
A simple metal key with no electronics. We cut it to code and you are done.
Looks like a regular key. No transponder chip on the 2000-2002 Monte Carlo; security lives in the ignition lock cylinder through GM's Passlock system.
Your key and remote are built into one unit. Three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk. The 2003-2005 still runs Passlock with no transponder chip.
Same style as the 2003-2005 key but now with a Philips Crypto 2 (ID46) transponder chip in the head. Three buttons, CR2032 battery. PK3+ programming through OBD-II.

Common Monte Carlo Key Problems
Ignition Cylinder Wear
First check on a 1995-1999 Monte Carlo no-start: the cylinder. Wafers wear with age, and the resistor pellet in the key drifts. Security light flashes, engine will not crank. We test resistance on-site and cut a new key with the correct value.
PK3+ Transponder Sync Loss
Owners blame the 2003-2007 Monte Carlo key, but the BCM lost sync with the transponder chip. Triggered by battery disconnect or module glitch. Security light on, engine will not start. We run a full relearn through OBD-II to get everything talking again.
Ignition Cylinder Failure
Key goes in but the cylinder binds, sticks, or will not turn. Common on 2000-2007 Monte Carlos, especially high-mileage ones in Simi Valley and Oxnard. A failing cylinder can throw off the transponder reading. We replace and reprogram in one visit.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
The CR2032 in your 2003-2007 remote head key should last years. Fast drain usually traces to a stuck button or a faulty door cylinder module pulling signal. Swap first. Dies again in weeks? Call (805) 790-8162; we diagnose fob vs car.
Can You Program a Monte Carlo Key Yourself?
No programming needed. These years use a plain mechanical key with no chip. You just need it cut to the right code.
Yes, if you have one working key. You can add a new key using the GM 10-minute relearn procedure: insert the working key, wait for the Security light to go out, swap to the new key, and repeat. This only works for adding a key. If all keys are lost, you need a locksmith.
Yes. The 2006-2007 supports a 30-minute relearn procedure even with all keys lost. You insert the new cut transponder key, wait 10 minutes and 30 seconds for the Security light to go out, cycle the ignition, and repeat two more times. It takes about 35 minutes total and the timing is critical. If it fails, wait an hour before trying again.

Did You Know?
Most people do not know this: the 1995-1999 Monte Carlo was the last front-wheel-drive version before the W-body redesign. It shared its platform with the Chevy Lumina and was one of the few GM coupes of that era with zero transponder technology. While competitors were already embedding chips in their keys, the Monte Carlo kept it simple with a plain metal key right up until the 2000 redesign.
