Got a call from a guy over in the Mountain Meadows neighborhood in Moorpark. His 2001 Monte Carlo SS, the 3.8L supercharged trim. He lost his only key somewhere between the house and his garage and had already called the Chevy dealer. They told him they'd need the car towed in, and the wait for parts and scheduling would be a few days at minimum.
He didn't want to wait. I get that.
I drove out with my key machine and GM key blanks. The Monte Carlo uses a standard mechanical key, no transponder chip. The anti-theft on these is Passlock, which lives in the ignition cylinder, not the key. So making a new key is about getting the right cut and letting the car's security relearn accept the new key turn.
I pulled the key code from his VIN, cut a fresh B103 blank on site, and turned the ignition. The "THEFT SYSTEM" light came on and the engine cranked but wouldn't fire, which is normal. The Passlock relearn takes about ten minutes of key-on waiting for the security light to go off, then a cycle of off and on. Did that three times.
After the third cycle, it started right up. He just stood there watching the dash, like he expected the light to come back.
Whole job took maybe twenty minutes, done right next to his car in the driveway. A fraction of what the dealer quoted him and no tow truck involved.
