How Corvette Key Security Evolved
C4: Mechanical Key
You turn this key in the ignition like any other key, but there is no transponder chip inside. The C4 uses a simple mechanical key with no immobilizer system. Straightforward to replace, and the most affordable Corvette key we do.
C5: Transponder Era Begins
GM added a transponder chip to the key starting with the C5. Your key likely uses a PK3 system, which means there is a chip inside the key head that talks to your car's computer before it will start. Laser-cut blade, three buttons on the fob, and a CR2032 battery. Losing all keys on a C5 means we need a Tech 2 scan tool to get you running again.
C6: Remote Head Key
The C6 combined the key and the remote into one unit, a remote head key with a laser-cut blade and integrated buttons. Still uses a transponder chip with an enhanced immobilizer. The LS7-powered Z06 and supercharged ZR1 use the same key platform as the base Stingray, so the key job is identical regardless of trim.
C7: Smart Key and Push-Button Start
This is where things got serious. The C7 introduced push-button start and a proximity smart key with four buttons. Your key uses an advanced immobilizer that may require server authentication for programming. You still get a laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside the fob, and the battery is a CR2032.
C8: Mid-Engine, Maximum Security
The mid-engine C8 brought GM's most advanced key security to date. Smart key with four buttons, push-button start, and an immobilizer system that can require server-based authentication or even dealer-only programming on certain trims. We handle many C8 key jobs on-site, but we will be upfront with you if your specific year and trim needs dealer involvement.
Which Key Does Your Corvette Use?
A simple metal key with no chip and no remote buttons built in. The easiest and cheapest Corvette key to replace.
A thick-headed key with a transponder chip inside and a separate or integrated three-button remote. Your car will not start without the chip being programmed to match.
The key and remote are one piece. Three buttons, a laser-cut blade, and a transponder chip all built into a single unit.
A proximity fob that stays in your pocket. Four buttons, push-button start, and a hidden emergency blade inside the fob for manual door entry.
The C8 uses a slim proximity fob with advanced encryption. Four buttons, push-button start, and the highest security level of any Corvette generation.

Common Corvette Key Problems
C5 Transponder Key Failures
Your 1997-2004 Corvette cranks but will not start or the security light is solid. The transponder chip likely failed, or fob battery contacts corroded. We test the chip on-site with our Autel IM608 and cut and program a replacement in your Oxnard driveway.
C6/C7 Remote Head Key Wear
C6/C7 lock button stops responding: usually a worn rubber pad or corroded contacts, not electronics. We swap your internals into a new shell and test before leaving. If the board is shot, we cut and program a full replacement on the spot.
C8 Dealer-Only Programming Restrictions
The 2020+ C8 uses GM's most advanced immobilizer, and some trims need dealer-only server authentication. We handle many C8 jobs mobile, but tell you upfront on the phone if your year/trim needs dealer intervention. No wasted trip to Thousand Oaks.
C4 to C5 Transition Key Incompatibility
First check on a mid-90s Corvette: 1996 or 1997? That year is everything. 1995-1996 C4 uses a plain mechanical key. 1997 C5 needs a transponder key and different programming. Just bought one in Camarillo? Call (805) 790-8162 and we sort it by VIN.
Can You Program a Corvette Key Yourself?
You can program a keyless entry remote yourself using the Trip/Odo and Fuel Info buttons on the dash. This does not program a key, just the remote fob for lock and unlock.
If you have one working transponder key, you can add a new one using the 10-minute relearn procedure. Insert the working key, wait for the security light to go out, swap to the new key within 10 seconds, and repeat. No tools needed, but you must already have a properly cut and chipped key.
Same 10-minute relearn as the C5. One working key gets you a second. If all keys are lost, you need professional equipment.
The C7 still supports the 10-minute relearn with one working key. Turn the working key to ON, wait for the security light to go out, swap to the new key within 10 seconds. All keys lost requires OBD-II programming.
You can pair a new remote fob through the DIC menu, but you need two working keys already recognized by the car. Place both on the passenger seat, navigate to Remote Key Learn, and follow the prompts. Transponder programming and all-keys-lost situations require professional or dealer tools.

The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 nameplate has appeared across multiple generations with dramatically different powerplants. The C4 ZR1 (1990 to 1995) featured the exotic LT5 V8 with 405 hp, while the 2025 C8 ZR1 produces 1,064 hp from a twin-turbocharged LT7. That is a 159% increase in power over 30 years.
