Got a call from a body shop over near Skofield Park in Santa Barbara. A 1996 Corvette had been sitting there for a week because no one could get it started. The shop had called another locksmith to make a replacement key after the owner lost his only one. That locksmith cut a blank, tried it, and the car went into the VATS lockout cycle. Three failed attempts later, the theft deterrent module was stuck in its four-minute penalty loop and the locksmith walked.
When I got there, I checked the ignition cylinder first. The contacts inside looked clean, which was good. The problem was simpler than anyone expected: the other locksmith had used the wrong resistance value. VATS has 15 pellet values, and if you don't interrogate the system to find the right one, you are just guessing.
I used my VATS interrogation tool on the wiring at the ignition to read what resistance the module was looking for. Value 10, which is 3.74K ohms. Cut a new B62-P key blank with the correct pellet, waited out the last lockout timer, and turned the key.
Engine fired right up. No BCM reflash needed, no bench work, no tow to the dealer. The body shop guys just stood there watching a car start like it was some kind of magic trick.
Whole thing took about 45 minutes, most of that waiting on the lockout timer to expire.
