Out in Oxnard Shores on a Saturday morning, a Corvette owner called me because his fob had stopped working entirely. Not short range, not intermittent. Completely dead. The car still started fine with the key, but he had zero remote function and was convinced he needed a whole new fob assembly.
I asked him one question before I drove out: when did you last change the battery. Long pause. He said he'd owned it for three years and never touched it.
I showed up to a clean C5 sitting in his driveway with the ocean a few blocks off. Popped the fob open, pulled the CR2032, and the thing was stone dead. Swapped in a fresh cell, snapped it back together, and ran through the buttons right there on the hood of my van.
Nothing. Still dead.
That meant the fob itself had lost its programming at some point, which happens on these when the battery drains completely. So I connected my tool, ran the programming sequence through the OBD port, and got the fob registered back to the car. Lock, unlock, and the other two buttons all confirmed working. The whole call took about twenty-five minutes.
He had been about to call the dealer Monday morning and figured he'd be without the car for the better part of a week. Didn't need any of that.
