First Generation Launch
A remote head key with a laser-cut blade and three buttons: lock, unlock, and panic. Your 2015 or 2016 Trax uses a Philips Crypto 2 / Hitag 2 (ID46) transponder chip that communicates with the immobilizer every time you start the car. No push-button start here; you turn the key in the ignition, and the chip does the talking behind the scenes.

Second Generation Redesign
The all-new 2024 Trax is a clean break from the older platform. Higher trims move to a proximity smart key with push-button start (HYQ4ES family, GM EXT chip, laser-cut emergency blade, CR2032), while the base trim keeps a flip key with a switchblade blade. Both program through GM SPS with server authentication, so a fresh key needs professional tools and a live GM connection regardless of which one your trim carries.

The base trim of the redesigned 2024-2025 Trax uses a flip key instead of a proximity fob. The laser-cut blade folds into the fob body and snaps out at the press of a button, and there is no push-button start on this trim. It still programs through GM SPS with server authentication.

Remote Keyless Entry System Failures
Press lock or unlock and nothing, or it works every third try. CR2032 is the usual suspect, and a fresh one fixes it 80% of the time. If the swap does not help, corrosion on the board inside the fob is likely the culprit, and we test on the spot.
Key Blade Wear on Laser-Cut Keys
Laser-cut blades on the Gamma Plus platform wear faster than standard keys because the cuts are shallow. The worn blade binds in the cylinder. We see this often on 2015-2018 Trax in Simi Valley and Oxnard. A fresh cut to factory specs solves it.
Immobilizer System Compatibility Issues
Before we touch your Trax, we verify if your year/trim can be programmed with our tools or needs dealer server access. Some GM immobilizer configs restrict aftermarket programming, all-keys-lost. We check before rolling so you never pay for a wasted trip.
Ignition Lock Cylinder Binding (2015-2017 Recall)
Owners assume the key is worn when the ignition gets stiff. Real issue on 2015-2017 Trax is a known cylinder defect under NHTSA recall 17V414000. Cylinder binds and can prevent key removal or starting. Dealer handles the recall free; we cut a working key.
Can You Program a Trax Key Yourself?
If you have a 2015 Trax with a standard ignition (not push-button start) and one working key, you can add a new key yourself using GM's 10-second relearn procedure. You start the engine with your original key, turn it off, then insert the new key and turn to ON within 10 seconds. The security light turns off when it takes. The new key must already be cut to your vehicle before you try this.
No DIY option here. Your 2016 or newer Trax requires professional OBD-II programming equipment to add or replace keys. We handle this on-site with our Autel IM608 or VVDI Key Tool Plus. If you have lost all keys, the process takes longer and costs more, but we can still get it done in your driveway in most cases.
