2018 Chevrolet Trax Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in the Limoneira area of Santa Paula, I got a call from a mom who had just discovered her 2018 Trax fob had gone through the washing machine with a load of laundry. She was at a school lot, kids in the back, and had maybe an hour before her next stop.
She had already called the dealer. They quoted a multi-day wait and a number that made her pause. It was Monday. They said Thursday at the earliest.
I drove out to her in the lot. The washed fob was truly done. The electronics inside had taken standing water and the buttons were unresponsive. She needed a fresh fob programmed from scratch, which on the 2018 Trax means connecting to the OBD port with the right diagnostic tool and running through the security handshake the vehicle requires. No shortcut exists for adding a smart key to this system.
I had the replacement fob registered to her vehicle and tested on all buttons in about 25 minutes. Walked the locks, tested range across the lot, confirmed the key-not-detected warning was gone from the dash.
Before I left, I told her to hold onto the old washed fob. The shell and buttons were intact. If her new fob ever gets cracked or the buttons wear through, it makes a decent donor for a shell swap.
She pulled out of that lot on time. The dealer was still Thursday.
