A woman in Santa Paula near Steckel Park was on her lunch break at the Target lot when I pulled up. She'd already called the dealer. They told her to schedule an appointment, bring the car in, and expect to leave it for a couple hours. That was next week at the earliest.
She didn't love that answer.
Her 2016 Chevy Trax had one working flip key left and the buttons were going mushy on it. She wanted a spare before the original died completely. Smart move.
I connected through the OBD-II port under the dash and talked to the body control module directly. The 2016 Trax runs GM's Hitag2 transponder protocol, so adding a key means the BCM has to accept the new chip ID through a security access sequence. I used my VVDI Key Tool to generate the transponder, cut the HU100 blade on my mobile machine, then programmed the KR55WK500733 fob to the car.
Lock, unlock, trunk, remote start. Tested each button walking around the car. Turned the ignition on and off three times. No theft light on the dash, no Service StabiliTrak message, nothing weird.
She sat on a bench checking her phone the whole time. Walked back over, tried both keys herself, and just nodded. Done before her break ended.
The car does not care where the programming happens. The handshake between the BCM and the transponder is identical whether it runs in a dealer bay or a parking lot near Steckel Park.
