A camper up in Cold Spring had been parked near one of the trail pullouts off East Camino Cielo for two days when it happened. He came back to his 2024 Trax and had nothing.
Not a dead fob, not a weak fob. No fob at all. He had one key when he left home and somewhere between the trail and the car it was gone. Push-button start, zero fobs, car sitting there completely locked up.
He called around. Two shops told him all-keys-lost on a push-button Trax was dealer-only. One told him to tow it to the Chevrolet store in town and plan on waiting a few days. He found me instead.
The thing about all-keys-lost on a push-button start vehicle is that there is no ignition cylinder to fall back on. The car is looking for a recognized fob signal before it does anything. Old key data has to be cleared from the system before new fobs can be enrolled. That is not a procedure you do with a button sequence. It takes diagnostic equipment connected through the OBD port, with the right software talking to the body control module directly.
I drove up to Cold Spring, found him at the pullout, and got to work on the hood. Cleared the stored key data, enrolled his new fob, tested the push-button start, walked the door handles, and confirmed the lock and unlock buttons were reading. From the time I arrived to the time he drove away was under an hour.
He said he had mentally written off the afternoon to a tow and a dealer appointment. The dealer comparison came up on its own. I just told him that all-keys-lost on this generation is a tool-dependent job, not a dealer-exclusive one. Right equipment, current software, and there is no reason it has to happen in a service bay.
