How Suburban Key Security Evolved

GMT400: Passlock Era

1999

You turn this key in the ignition like any other key. Your 1999 Suburban runs GM's Passlock anti-theft system, not VATS or a transponder chip in the key. Security lives in the ignition cylinder, where a Hall-effect sensor reads a coded magnet as the key turns. We cut by code and run the Passlock relearn when needed.

GMT800: Remote Head Key

2000-2006

GM made a big jump here for keyless entry. Your key now has lock, unlock, and panic buttons built right into the head, powered by a CR2032 battery. Under the hood, security is still GM's Passlock system, not a transponder chip in the key. We cut by code, program the remote, and run the on-board Passlock relearn when needed.

GMT900: Upgraded Security

2007-2014

This is where security got serious. The PK3+ system uses a Philips Crypto 2 (ID46) transponder chip. On-board programming works with a working key; all-keys-lost needs OBD-II PIN retrieval. Your remote head key has up to five buttons on LTZ trims. We handle PIN retrieval on-site with our Autel IM608.

K2XX: Smart Key and Push Start

2015-2020

No more turning a key. Your Suburban now uses a proximity smart fob with an ID46 chip and encrypted PK3+ immobilizer. The emergency blade is laser-cut, and programming requires GM Techline Connect or MDI2 with a subscription. This generation demands dealer-level tools, and we carry them.

T1XX: Server Authentication

2021-2025

GM's Global B architecture locks everything behind server-based authentication. Your smart key uses an NXP Hitag AES (ID49) chip (FCC YG0G21TB2) with a laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside. The 2021 and newer Suburbans require GM SPS online access. We will confirm whether we can handle your specific situation before we roll out.

Which Key Does Your Suburban Use?

🔑
Passlock Key
1999

A simple metal key with a resistor pellet in the blade. No buttons, no battery. The ignition reads the pellet's resistance value to verify it is the right key.

🔑
Passlock Remote Head Key
2000-2006

Your key and remote are combined into one piece. Three buttons on top for lock, unlock, and panic. Uses a standard double-sided blade that any qualified locksmith can cut.

🔑
Remote Head Key (5-Button)
2007-2014

Similar shape to the previous generation but with up to five buttons, including remote start on some trims. Still uses a standard blade, but the chip inside is more advanced.

🔑
Smart Key Fob
2015-2020

A proximity fob that stays in your pocket. Your Suburban detects it when you grab the door handle and lets you start with a push button. The hidden emergency blade is laser-cut.

🔑
Smart Key Fob (Global B)
2021-2025

Looks similar to the 2015-2020 fob but runs on GM's newest security platform. Four buttons, laser-cut emergency blade, and server-level authentication for programming.

Common Suburban Key Problems

🔑

Passlock Sensor Drift (1999)

Your 1999 Suburban cranks but will not start, security light flashing. The Passlock sensor in the cylinder drifts, and the BCM cannot read it, so the truck thinks it is being stolen. We diagnose on-site and cut a fresh key by code, or replace the ring.

⚠️

PK3+ Transponder Sync Failure (2007-2014)

Owners blame the key, but the real problem is the transponder antenna losing sync with the ECM, common after a battery swap on GMT900 Suburbans. The 30-minute relearn (key ON 10 min, OFF, repeat three) fixes it. Otherwise we reset the BCM in Simi Valley.

🔋

Smart Key Battery Drain (2015-2025)

The proximity system in your 2015+ Suburban constantly polls for the fob. Leave it in the vehicle or near the truck in your garage and it drains the CR2032 fast. We check the battery first; a fresh CR2032 solves it nine times out of ten.

🔐

PIN Code Retrieval Issues (2000-2014)

First check on an all-keys-lost Suburban 2000-2014: can we pull the security PIN? GMT800 and GMT900 need the dealer PIN or extraction through our Autel IM608. Some shops will not tell you upfront. We do, and handle it in Oxnard or Camarillo.

Can You Program a Suburban Key Yourself?

1999 (GMT400)
Yes - DIY Possible

You can program the remote fob yourself using the OBD-II port jumper method (connecting pins 4 and 8). But the transponder key itself requires professional EEPROM tools. Remote, yes. Key, no.

2000-2006 (GMT800)
Yes - DIY Possible

If you have at least one working key, you can add a new one using GM's 10-minute relearn procedure: key ON for 10 minutes, OFF, repeat three times. No working keys means you need professional OBD-II tools and the security PIN.

2007-2014 (GMT900)
Yes - DIY Possible

Same 10-minute relearn works here if you have a working key. The catch is that some years with PK3+ require a scan tool even for add-a-key. If the relearn fails, call us.

2015-2020 (K2XX)
Yes - DIY Possible

You can pair a new remote fob using the push-to-start learning mode if you already have a programmed fob. Transponder programming requires GM Techline Connect, so that part is not a DIY job.

2021-2025 (T1XX)
Yes - DIY Possible

The push-to-start remote learning procedure works for pairing additional fobs. But the key's transponder programming requires GM server authentication. No way around that one at home.

Suburban Key FAQs

💡

Did You Know?

You would not guess it, but the 1999 Suburban was the final year of GM's legendary GMT400 platform, which had an incredible 17-year production run. GM's Passlock system was one of the first electronic immobilizers that did not require a special key, replacing the older VATS resistor-pellet design used on cars like the Camaro and Corvette. Passlock reads a Hall-effect sensor in the ignition cylinder, and the cylinder would only allow start if the reading matched exactly.
