1999 Chevrolet Suburban
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does it take to get a replacement key made once you arrive?

For a 1999 Suburban, usually 15 to 20 minutes once I'm at the vehicle. I decode the existing lock or ignition, cut the blade, and test it. There's no programming wait, no security timer, no countdown cycle to sit through. It's a cut-to-car job. You're back on the road fast.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer for a 1999 Suburban?

Every time, on a vehicle like this. The dealer process means scheduling, potentially towing, and waiting for shop availability. With a 1999 Suburban, I show up at your location, decode or reference the key cut, and cut a new key on site. One visit, done. No appointment next week, no leaving the truck overnight, no shop-time markup on a job that takes under half an hour.

Q: I have a spare key but it's worn down and starting to slip in the ignition. Can you cut a new one from it?

A worn key is actually one of the trickier situations, and it's worth knowing why. If I cut a new key directly from a badly worn original, I risk duplicating the wear into the new blank, and then you have two keys that both kind of work but neither works reliably. The better move is to decode the lock cylinder or the ignition directly and cut the replacement from that measurement instead of from the worn key.

Q: My 1999 Suburban ignition is getting stiff and the key is hard to turn. Is that a key problem or an ignition problem?

Could be either, but on a truck this age it's often both feeding each other. A worn key puts uneven pressure on the tumblers, which wears the cylinder faster. A worn cylinder grips the key wrong, which wears the key faster. First step is to try a known-good cut key in the cylinder. If it turns smoothly, the issue is the key blank. If a fresh cut still binds, the cylinder itself is worn or the tumblers are sticking.

1999 Chevrolet Suburban Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy from the Conejo Oaks area called me on a Saturday morning. He'd lost the only key to his 1999 Suburban and his wife had somewhere to be by noon. He'd already called the dealer, who told him to tow it in and come back Monday. That wasn't going to work.

I pulled up to his driveway with my cutter and decoding tools. The Suburban was sitting right there in the sun, not going anywhere. I decoded the lock, cut a replacement key blade to match, and had it tested in the ignition and both door locks before he'd finished his coffee. His wife made her appointment.

No tow truck, no appointment, no Monday. Just a key cut to the car, on site, in Thousand Oaks. Dealer wanted to make it a whole production. It wasn't.

Chevrolet Suburban Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key for my 1999 Suburban after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call us. Dealer service departments keep weekday hours and most are closed Sundays. If you lose your key on a Friday night or a Saturday morning, that can mean the whole weekend without a vehicle. We work evenings and weekends throughout Thousand Oaks and can come to you in Conejo Oaks or wherever the truck is sitting. A replacement key for a 1999 Suburban doesn't need a dealer bay.
