Cold Spring Trail in Montecito, right off the hiking path parking area. The 2021 Suburban owner had already been to a hardware store that "makes car keys." They cut him a B119-PHT blank but couldn't program it. He drove home on his last working key.
The dash threw "Service Theft Deterrent System" when he tried the new blank. Not even a crank attempt. The Suburban's BCM was doing its job, rejecting an unprogrammed transponder.
I connected through the OBD port and pulled the key data. His working key showed clean: ID46 chip, proper serial registration. The hardware store blank was just metal and plastic. No chip at all. They sold him a shell.
Programming the 2021 Suburban takes about 20 minutes when you follow GM's SPS sequence. Load the BCM calibration, enter the key serial, wait for the security timer. The new B119-PHT learned on first try. Both keys tested: lock, unlock, panic, remote start, and most important, the engine fired up without complaints.
He asked what the dealer wanted for this. I told him their quote was triple what I charged, plus the tow since he only had one key. We handled it right there in the trailhead lot.
