2020 Chevrolet Suburban
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement key last on a 2020 Suburban?

Years, under normal use. The electronics inside a quality fob are durable. What actually fails over time is physical: the plastic shell cracks around the key ring loop, or the battery door gets loose and starts causing intermittent contact issues. The good news is that if the shell wears out but the internals are intact, the board can usually be transferred to a fresh housing without any reprogramming.

Q: What if the replacement key stops working after a few weeks?

Call me and I come back. Every key I make is covered. If it loses remote function, throws a warning, or stops starting the vehicle under normal use, I fix or replace it -- no argument. This matters because proximity fob issues on the 2020 Suburban can be subtle. A key that programs correctly and works on day one can develop range problems or intermittent no-start behavior if there's a contact issue or a marginal fob.

Q: My 2020 Suburban shows a key-not-detected warning but the fob battery is new. What's actually going on?

This comes up a lot on owner forums for this generation. A fresh battery fixes it maybe half the time. The other cases usually fall into one of a few categories. First, check how the battery is seated. If the previous swap was done in a hurry or with the wrong tool, the battery contact inside the fob can get slightly bent. The battery looks installed, makes visual contact, but isn't making reliable electrical contact.

Q: I have a spare fob for my 2020 Suburban that was never programmed. Can I add it myself?

No. The 2020 Suburban proximity system requires diagnostic equipment to register a new fob. There is no ignition-cycle or button-sequence self-programming method that works on this vehicle. If you found a fob online or have a spare from a previous owner, it still needs to be paired to your specific vehicle using a professional scan tool before it will do anything. Bring the fob and the vehicle to me and I handle it on site in Montecito.

2020 Chevrolet Suburban Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Saturday night in Montecito. I was already running a job near Coast Village when the call came in -- a couple walking out of dinner to a 2020 Suburban that wouldn't respond to either fob. Not one button on either remote. The truck just sat there.

They'd tried holding the fob closer to the door handle. Tried it again from inside the driver's window. Nothing. One of them pulled up the OnStar app on their phone to see if they could lock and unlock that way while they figured out next steps. That's when they found me instead.

I had the right fob housings and CR2032 cells in labeled drawers in the van. Swapped both batteries on site, cleaned the contact points, reseated everything. First fob lit right up. Second one took an extra minute because the battery clip had a slight bend from whoever had opened it last -- probably a rushed battery swap that never quite worked.

Walked every button on both fobs before I called it done. Lock, unlock, the start button response through the pillar, the remaining buttons, the emergency blade test in the door lock. Both fobs back to full function. The truck was running before they finished paying.

They said they'd already mentally written off the rest of the evening and were resigning themselves to figuring out a ride home. It was closer to 20 minutes of work than an hour. That's what having the right parts in the van actually means -- the job doesn't wait on a parts run.

Chevrolet Suburban Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Chevrolet vehicles?▼

Professional-grade, OEM-specification fobs from tested suppliers. The reason that matters on a 2020 Suburban specifically is that the proximity system is picky about signal quality. Cheap fobs that look identical to the factory unit can have RF output just weak enough to cause intermittent no-start or short detection range -- and those problems show up weeks after the initial programming, not right away, which makes them hard to trace back to the fob itself.
