Got a call from a guy up near Wheeler Hot Springs in Ojai. His 2000 Chevrolet Suburban had been sitting for a couple weeks while he was out of town. He came back, turned the key, and the engine cranked but would not fire. The "Security" light on the dash was solid. He tried the other key. Same thing.

On these GMT400-to-GMT800 trucks, the hall-effect sensor in the ignition lock cylinder goes bad with age. The body control module, part number 09354896 on a lot of these Suburbans, sees a resistance value it does not recognize and kills the fuel injectors.
I ran the 10-minute Passlock relearn right there in his driveway. Key to ON, wait for the Security light to go off, cycle back to OFF, repeat three times, then start. Fired right up on the fourth cycle. Tested it twice more to make sure the BCM held the new value.
He just sat in the driver's seat for a second, like he was waiting for it to die again. It did not. He was back on the road that same day, no tow, no dealer wait, for a fraction of what they quoted him.
