What if I need a key replacement after hours or on the weekend?

Call us directly. Chevy dealer service departments close evenings and most of Sunday, and key programming is not something OnStar can do remotely. They can help with a lockout or arrange a tow, but the actual transponder enrollment and fob pairing waits until the dealer reopens. How long does the programming actually take once you're at my car?

On a 2006 Suburban with at least one working key, adding a spare transponder key and pairing the fob typically runs 15 to 20 minutes once I'm connected at the OBD port.

All-keys-lost is a different situation. When there are no working keys enrolled, the vehicle security system requires a timed relearn cycle before it will accept new keys. That process adds time, and the wait is built into the system. You can't skip it. Expect 45 to 60 minutes for all-keys-lost on this generation, start to finish.

The point is: adding a spare today, while you still have a working key, is the faster and easier path.

Can you get to me faster than the dealer can take care of this?

Almost always. The dealer process on a 2006 Suburban involves scheduling, getting the truck there, and sometimes waiting on parts to be ordered. First thing to check is the CR2032 battery in the fob. These go dead without much warning, and a low battery can drop range down to almost nothing before it quits entirely. Swap the battery, make sure it's seated flat against both contacts, and test from a normal distance.

If a fresh CR2032 doesn't fix it, the fob may have lost its pairing to the body control module. That happens sometimes after a battery disconnect or if the module lost power. Re-pairing the fob is a quick job and doesn't require cutting a new key. If the fob itself is damaged internally, a replacement fob with the correct factory ID can be paired in its place. Either way, starting and remote entry are separate problems on this truck.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2006 Suburban. Can I program it myself?

This generation does have an onboard programming procedure that some owners have used successfully to add or re-pair a fob without special tools, provided you already have a working key to operate the ignition. The sequence involves cycling the ignition and doors in a specific order to put the body control module into programming mode.

That said, it doesn't always work on the first try, and if the module doesn't enter programming mode cleanly, you can end up thinking the fob is bad when the sequence just didn't complete. If you've tried the DIY route and the fob still isn't responding, bring the truck to us or have us come to you. We can confirm whether the fob you bought is the right one, get the module into programming mode reliably, and verify the pairing actually took.
