2003 Chevrolet Suburban
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does the job actually take once you're at my car?

For a 2003 Suburban, it depends on what you need. Battery swap or fob check is a few minutes. If you have a working key and just need a second remote added, the onboard programming sequence on this generation of GM truck is quick once you're set up, usually under 20 minutes at the vehicle. All-keys-lost is a longer job because the security system has built-in wait cycles that can't be skipped.

Q: Can you get this done faster than going to the dealer?

Almost always, yes. The dealer process on a 20-year-old Suburban typically means scheduling an appointment, potentially waiting for parts to come in, and paying for shop labor that gets billed in flat-rate increments. Owners on GM truck forums have posted about waiting a week or more just for an appointment, plus extra time if the fob had to be ordered. I show up at your location in Upper Ojai with what I need and handle it on site.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself or do I need someone to come out?

Good news on this one. The 2003 Suburban uses an onboard remote programming procedure that doesn't require any external tool. You need to confirm the fob you bought carries the factory FCC ID for this application, because not every cheap aftermarket unit sold online is actually compatible even if the shape looks right. If the FCC ID matches and you have a working ignition key, the add-a-key sequence is something you can walk through in your driveway.

Q: The fob range on my 2003 Suburban is terrible even with a new battery. What's going on?

Short range after a fresh battery usually points to one of a few things. The battery contacts inside the fob can corrode or lose their spring tension over time, so the new cell isn't making solid contact even though it's in there. Open the fob back up, check that the contacts are clean and pressing firmly against the battery, and reseat it.

2003 Chevrolet Suburban Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman up in Upper Ojai on a Saturday morning. Her 2003 Suburban fob had stopped working entirely. She'd already tried pressing the buttons harder, which never works, and figured she needed to order something from the dealer. She wasn't in a rush, just annoyed that she'd been manually unlocking the truck for two weeks.

I drove out to meet her. She handed me the fob and it felt light. I already had a guess. Popped it open on the tailgate and the CR2032 inside had that dull, milky look that tells you it's been in there way too long.

Fresh cell, snapped it back together, stood about 30 feet from the truck and hit lock. The horn chirped. That was the whole problem.

But since I was already there, I walked through the rest of it. Unlocking from distance, checking the third button, making sure the range was solid in all directions. Everything was working the way it should. She laughed a little and said she'd been putting off calling for weeks because she assumed it was going to be a whole thing.

It wasn't a whole thing. It was a battery. Done before she finished her coffee.

Chevrolet Suburban Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key or fob help after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call us. Chevy dealer service departments close evenings and are often shut Sundays. OnStar can assist with lockouts and can dispatch a tow, but it cannot reprogram a remote or sort out a key issue on the spot. That means any real key work waits until the dealer opens and you can get an appointment.
