I got a call from a body shop in Ormond Beach, Oxnard. Not a customer directly. The shop had already brought in another locksmith for a key replacement on a 2016 Suburban, that guy got a security warning on the dash after a failed attempt, and he walked. Left the car sitting, left the shop holding the problem.
When I pulled up, the Suburban had a security warning on the cluster and the body control module was in a fault state from the interrupted programming sequence. The body shop guys were watching the whole time. I walked them through what the previous attempt likely did wrong, mostly a power interruption mid-sequence, so they'd have something useful to tell the next customer who came in asking about key work.
Job ran close to an hour and a half, which is longer than a clean all-keys-lost usually takes. But it got done same day, on-site, for a fraction of what a dealer would have charged after a flatbed ride and a multi-day wait. That's why I carry the bench tools. Not every job needs them, but when one does, you don't want to be the guy packing up and leaving.
