Got a call from a body shop near Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard. A 2016 Suburban was sitting in their lot with a "Service Theft Deterrent System" message frozen on the DIC and zero response from the push button. Another locksmith had already tried the job and bailed.
What happened was pretty common. The first tech lost power or connection during the security relearn sequence, and the BCM latched into theft deterrent mode. Once that module faults mid-write, the OBD port stops cooperating with standard programming. Most shops see that and say tow it to the dealer.
I brought my ACDP bench tool as backup. Read the BCM security data directly off the board, cleared the stored fault, and rebuilt the encrypted seed-key handshake from scratch. The previous attempt had left a partial key index in memory, which is why normal OBD relearn kept rejecting.
Once the BCM was clean, the new HYQ1AA fob with all six buttons learned on the first pass. Tested proximity unlock on every door handle, liftgate button, remote start, and push-button engine start. Walked the body shop guys through what went sideways so they'd recognize it next time.
Took about ninety minutes, which is longer than a normal key job. But the alternative was a flatbed ride to the dealer and a multi-day wait for a fraction of what they would have charged.
