A family out in the East End of Ojai called me on a Tuesday afternoon. Dad had the one working fob clipped to his keys. Mom's had been dropped in a puddle at some point, sat in a drawer for a month, and now did nothing. She needed it working before a long week of school runs and errands, and she wasn't about to wait for a dealer appointment.
The truck started fine. The ignition key was never the issue. It was purely the remote, and she still wanted a second working fob in her hand before the week started.
I met them in their driveway off East End. Popped the non-working fob open first thing. The battery contacts inside were visibly corroded -- green and dull -- and the CR2032 had a thin film on it. Cleaned the contacts, fresh battery, snapped it back together. Still nothing. At that point the fob itself was the problem, not just the battery.
I pulled a replacement shell from my kit, transferred the electronics, confirmed the factory ID on the fob matched what I needed, and programmed it to the truck at the OBD port. Ran through all three buttons twice to confirm the truck was responding. Both front doors, tested individually. Worked clean.
The whole job took about 40 minutes in their driveway. She had a working fob before dinner. The dealer was mentioned only in passing -- she said they'd quoted a wait and a price that made her put it off for weeks. I didn't ask what the number was. Didn't need to.
