Got a call from a guy out near Lake Casitas Recreation Area in Ventura. His 2012 Chevrolet Suburban had been giving him trouble for about a month. Key catching in the ignition, needing a jiggle and a shove to turn over. Some mornings he would sit there working the key back and forth for five minutes before it would finally rotate.
He had already called the dealer. They wanted to replace the full ignition cylinder, cut new keys, reprogram everything. Overkill.
I drove out and checked the Z-keyway cylinder. The wafers were worn down, which is the most common failure point on these GMT900 trucks once they get past 100k miles. The cylinder housing itself was fine.
Before I touched anything mechanical I used my ACDP to back up the body control module data on the 15818498 BCM board. Then I decoded the lock, swapped out the bad wafers, and cut a fresh B111-PT key matched to the repaired cylinder. His separate remote (OUC60270) synced right back up through the OBD port.
I pulled the old wafers out and showed him. Thin as paper on one side. He kept turning them over in his hand like he was trying to figure out how the car started at all.
New key turns smooth. No jiggle, no fight. He kept the whole ignition assembly and paid way less than what the dealer quoted for parts he did not need.
