2012 Chevrolet Suburban Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Saticoy, a guy had been fighting his 2012 Suburban's ignition for a few weeks. Key would bind on the way in, sometimes it would turn fine, other days he'd sit there in the driveway working it back and forth until something gave.
He'd already talked to the dealer, who told him he needed a new ignition cylinder, new keys, and a full reprogram. He was one phone call away from booking that appointment.
His neighbor told him to try a locksmith first.
When I got there and looked at the cylinder, the issue was wafer wear, not a failed cylinder. On these trucks, the ignition wafers take a beating over a hundred thousand miles, and a worn wafer drags just enough to make the key feel like it's fighting the lock. The cylinder itself was still serviceable.
I decoded the lock, replaced the worn wafers, and cut a fresh key matched to the repaired cylinder. Tested it cold, tested it warm, ran it through several cycles right there in the driveway.
He watched the whole thing from about three feet away. When I handed him the finished key and he turned it the first time without any resistance, he just stood there for a second like he was waiting for it to catch again. It didn't.
What the dealer quoted him covered a full cylinder swap he didn't need. What I did was replace the parts that were actually worn, on site, for a fraction of that number.
