Out in Nyeland Acres, I got a call from a guy who had been sitting in his driveway for forty minutes trying to figure out why his 2015 Suburban wouldn't acknowledge his fob. Not dead, not stolen, not damaged. Just sitting there showing a key-not-detected warning every time he walked up to the door.
He had already done the obvious thing. Fresh CR2032 from the gas station up the street. Still nothing. He figured he needed a whole new fob programmed and was ready to hear a big number.
I pulled up, and the first thing I did was open the fob and look at the battery install. Gas station batteries come in those blister packs where you have to peel the tab, and a lot of people don't notice the small plastic insulator strip that sometimes stays behind on the terminal. It was right there, barely visible, sitting between the battery and the contact. Thirty seconds to remove it. The fob came back to life immediately.
I still walked every function before I packed up. All six buttons, both door handles, the push-to-start response, everything. When it all checked out, he just shook his head and said he felt ridiculous. I told him it happens constantly with these fobs and that the strip is easy to miss.
He didn't need programming. He didn't need a new fob. He needed someone to show up and actually look at the thing. That is the job sometimes, and I would rather find the small fix than sell someone something they do not need.
