Got a call from a guy out near Ojai Meadows Preserve. His 2001 Suburban wouldn't start. He turned the key, the engine cranked strong, but it just would not catch. The SECURITY light on the dash was flashing at him steady.
He had already tried the usual internet advice: turn the key to ON, wait ten minutes for the light to go off, turn it off, repeat three times. That is the Passlock relearn procedure, and it works when the sensor is still healthy. His was not.
I drove out there and checked the basics first. Cranking was fine, fuel pump primed, battery was solid. The Passlock II sensor in the steering column housing had gone intermittent. These sensors fail a lot on the GMT800 trucks. GM even put out a revised service procedure for the Passlock relearn under document ID 834827 because so many of these were coming in.
Cut him a fresh B102 key on the truck, addressed the Passlock situation, ran the full ten-minute-cycle relearn three times through, and waited for the SECURITY light to stay solid and then go out. Took about 40 minutes total, most of it just sitting there watching the clock tick down on those relearn cycles.
He said the dealer told him to tow it in and leave it for a couple days. He was back on the road before lunch, parked right there on the gravel where he broke down.
