How Camaro Key Security Evolved
Early F-Body VATS
Your 1995 Camaro uses a VATS resistor pellet embedded in the key blade. There is no transponder chip and no remote fob; just a metal key with a tiny resistor that the ignition reads every time you turn it. If the resistance value does not match one of 15 possible codes, the car will not start.
VATS Plus Remote Entry
Your 1996 or 1997 Camaro still runs the same VATS resistor pellet system in the key blade. The big change is GM added a 3-button remote fob for keyless entry, powered by a CR2032 battery. The fob handles locks and trunk, but the ignition security is still all about that resistor value.
Late F-Body VATS with On-Board Fob Programming
Your 1998 through 2002 Camaro keeps the VATS resistor pellet key and the 3-button remote fob with a CR2032 battery. What changed is GM added an on-board programming procedure for the remote, so new fobs can be synced by cycling the ignition and pulling the radio fuse. The immobilizer itself is still pure VATS resistance matching, no OBD programming needed.
Which Key Does Your Camaro Use?
A standard metal key with a small black resistor pellet visible in the blade. No buttons, no remote, no battery. The resistor is the security system.
Same VATS resistor key as the 1995, but now you also carry a separate 3-button remote fob for lock, unlock, and trunk. The fob uses a CR2032 battery.
Looks identical to the 1996-1997 setup. VATS resistor key plus a 3-button remote fob with CR2032 battery. The difference is the fob can be programmed through an on-board ignition cycling procedure.

Common Camaro Key Problems
VATS Failure / No Start
We measure the resistor pellet in your key blade with an ohmmeter. Over time the pellet wears or the ignition contacts corrode, and the car refuses to start. We match the value from 15 possible codes and cut a fresh VATS key on the spot.
Key Fob Battery Drain / False Alarm Triggers
Random horn alarms usually trace to a weak CR2032 in the fob or a timing issue: unlock with the remote but do not get the key into the ignition fast enough, and the factory alarm reads it as a break-in. Fresh battery plus a fob reprogram usually solves it.
Lost VATS Key Code
Security light flashing, Camaro will not crank, no one can tell you which of 15 VATS resistance values the car needs (no code stamped anywhere). We ohm-meter the value from your key, or read it from the VATS module if all keys are lost. Key cut on-site.
Can You Program a Camaro Key Yourself?
You can program a remote yourself using the Data Link Connector jump method near the steering column. The VATS key itself cannot be self-programmed; the resistor value must be physically matched, which requires an ohmmeter and the correct blank.
Remote fob programming is doable at home by pulling the radio fuse and cycling the ignition three times within five seconds. Timing matters here, and if you miss a step you may need to start over. The VATS key still requires professional resistance matching and cutting.
Same radio fuse removal and ignition cycling method as the 1996-1997 models. You can program up to four remotes, but be aware that adding a new one erases all existing remote codes, so have every fob you want to use ready at the same time. The VATS key itself still needs professional cutting and resistance matching.

Did You Know?
VATS, which stands for Vehicle Anti-Theft System, uses a simple resistor pellet embedded in the key blade with 15 possible resistance values. GM introduced it in 1986 on the Corvette, making it one of the earliest electronic immobilizer systems in any production car. By the time your 4th-gen Camaro rolled off the line, the same basic technology was still doing the job.
