East Ventura, townhouse complex, tight assigned parking. The guy called because a tow truck couldn't make the turn into the lot. Low clearance at the entrance, cars parked door-to-door on both sides, his 1998 Camaro wedged against a wall in a covered spot. The only way out was to drive it. He had no working key.
I parked on the street and walked in with my bag.
The Camaro had one of those worn ignition cylinders that had probably been babied for years. The original key was long gone and somebody had been using a copy of a copy, ground down enough that it barely turned. I decoded the lock, confirmed the cut depth, and had a new key cut to his vehicle on the spot.
Turned the ignition. Fired right up.
He asked me what I would have done if I couldn't decode the lock. I told him I would have pulled the key code from the vehicle records instead. Either way, we get there.
He had a working key and a spare, his car never moved an inch until he chose to move it, and the whole thing took less time than it would have to arrange a tow. Dealer was not part of the conversation, but I know what that route looks like and he saved a good chunk.
