2000 Chevrolet Camaro
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 2000 Chevrolet Camaro actually use?

It's a metal key, full stop. No remote. No fob. No buttons. The key gets cut to your car - either by pulling the key code or by decoding one of your locks - and it turns in the ignition cylinder and the door locks. There's nothing to program and no battery to replace. Replacement is a cutting job, not an electronics job.

Q: What equipment do you use to make a key for a 2000 Camaro?

For this car, the main tool is a quality mobile key cutter. I carry key blanks that fit the Camaro's ignition and door cylinders. If you have a working key, I duplicate it directly. If you've lost all your keys, I decode the lock or pull the key code through other means and cut to that. No diagnostic port, no programming software, no security bypass hardware needed for this vehicle.

Q: I lost all my keys for my 2000 Camaro. Can you still make one without a working key to copy?

Yes. All-keys-lost on this car is not the nightmare it is on newer vehicles. Since the key is purely mechanical, I have two paths: decode the lock cylinder directly to determine the cuts, or look up the key code through the VIN. Either way, I cut a working key on the spot. No tow to the dealer, no waiting for a parts order.

Q: My 2000 Camaro key turns but the car won't start - could it be the key itself?

If the key turns freely, the cut is probably fine. On a car this age, the more likely culprit is the ignition switch or the cylinder wafers. These wear down over time, especially if the key ring was heavy or the key was rough-handled for years. The cylinder can get to a point where it turns without fully engaging the switch. A locksmith can check whether the cylinder is worn or whether the key cut has drifted out of spec.

2000 Chevrolet Camaro Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already parked near The Mesa on a Saturday evening when the call came in. A guy had locked his keys inside his 2000 Camaro in a lot off Meigs Road. His spare was at home across town, and he wasn't about to call a tow for something like that.

I had the right key blank for his car in a labeled drawer behind my seat. Cut it on the spot with my mobile cutter, and he was in the car inside a few minutes. No waiting on parts, no Monday-morning dealer appointment.

He mentioned he'd been quoted something by a national chain locksmith app that turned out to be a base price with fees on top. He didn't love hearing that before calling me. I give one number on the phone before I show up. That's the number.

He drove home. That was the whole job.

Chevrolet Camaro Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a shady locksmith before I get burned?▼

Three things to watch. First, they won't commit to a total price for your specific vehicle on the phone - only a vague "starting at" number. Second, they show up and either can't do the job or suddenly discover extra fees once they're in your driveway. Third, they add invented line items like licensing surcharges or per-key "security fees" that were never mentioned upfront. A real mobile locksmith quotes you one number for the actual job before they leave.
