How Blazer Key Security Changed Over the Years
Pre-Facelift (Mechanical)
Your early second-gen Blazer uses a plain mechanical key with no transponder chip. There is no VATS and no PK3 on this generation; the engine cranks and starts purely on the cut. We cut by code from your VIN and you drive away.
Facelift (Pass-Key III)
On-board programming makes this one straightforward, but only for the keyless remote. Your 1998-2002 Blazer uses GM's Passlock anti-theft system, which does not carry a transponder chip in the key. We cut by code, program the remote on-site, and run the Passlock relearn when needed.
Late Model (PK3+)
GM continued Passlock through the final Blazer years on this body. Still no transponder chip, still a remote head key. The remote programs on-board, and a Tech 2 helps when the BCM needs to relearn the Passlock sensor. We carry the right equipment on every call.
Which Key Does Your Blazer Use?
A standard blade mechanical key. No transponder chip, no immobilizer, no remote buttons built into the key head on these early models.
Your key has the remote buttons built right into the head. Lock, unlock, and panic on a standard blade. No transponder chip; Passlock handles immobilization through the ignition cylinder.
Looks identical to the 1998-2002 key and runs on the same Passlock system. Three buttons, standard blade, no transponder chip in the key.
Pricing by Generation
Every price includes the key blank, cutting, transponder programming, and testing, all done at your location.

Common Blazer Key Problems
Ignition Cylinder Wear
On 1998-2002 Blazers the resistor pellet in the key wears and gives inconsistent readings, mimicking a bad starter. We test resistance first. If the pellet is shot, a new key with the correct resistance solves it without touching the ignition.
Transponder Chip Failure
We check chip signal strength first on your 2003-2005 Blazer. The Texas 4D chip can lose sync with the BCM (reprogram fixes it) or fail (new key cut and programmed via OBD-II). We diagnose on the spot.
Remote Fob Battery Corrosion
The CR2032 in your fob does not last forever, and when it leaks the acid eats the board. Common on Blazers near the coast in Oxnard and Ventura. Board good: new battery and a clean. Board damaged: we replace and reprogram on the spot.
Ignition Cylinder Wear
Key feels stiff or sticks coming out: not a key problem. High-mileage Blazers develop worn tumblers in the cylinder until the key snaps off. We replace the cylinder and cut a fresh key on-site in Simi Valley, Camarillo, or anywhere in the county.
Can You Program a Blazer Key Yourself?
Yes, you can program the lock, unlock, and panic buttons yourself using GM's door unlock procedure. Hold the driver's door unlock switch, cycle the ignition on and off twice, then press lock and unlock on the new remote until the doors cycle. This only programs the remote buttons. It does not program the transponder chip.
No. There is no DIY procedure for programming the Texas 4D transponder chip in your Blazer key. You need a professional scan tool to write the chip to the BCM. That is the part that actually lets the truck start, and it requires either OBD-II or on-board programming with a PIN code depending on your year.

Did You Know?
The 1998-2005 Blazer used GM's Pass-Key III system, one of the first widely deployed transponder immobilizers in a mid-size SUV. It reduced theft rates on the Blazer by over 50% compared to the previous generation. Not bad for a little chip smaller than a grain of rice buried inside the key head.
