1999 Chevrolet Blazer
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key system does the 1999 Chevrolet Blazer use?

The 1999 Blazer uses two separate pieces. There is a metal ignition key that starts the truck, and a separate remote fob with four buttons that handles your door locks and other functions. They are not combined into one flip unit. The fob runs on a CR2032 battery. These are older remotes and the housings crack, the button pads wear out, and the battery contacts corrode over time.

Q: How long does the dealer process take for a Blazer key or remote replacement?

Longer than the job actually takes. On a truck this age, dealers often need to order the part first, which adds days before the work even starts. Then shop time gets quoted in large blocks that rarely reflect how long programming actually runs. With a mobile locksmith, the appointment is at your location, the part arrives with the tech, and the job gets done in one visit. No drop-off, no waiting room, no calling to check if it is ready.

Q: My 1999 Blazer remote works sometimes and not others. Is it the fob or the truck?

On these older GM fobs, intermittent behavior is almost always the fob itself before it is the truck. The most common causes are a worn button pad that is not making full contact, a cracked housing that lets the board flex slightly when you press, or a CR2032 sitting loose because the battery door no longer clips tight. Start by opening the fob and checking that the battery is seated flat and the contacts are clean.

Q: Can I program a replacement remote for my 1999 Blazer myself?

Some older GM trucks from this era do have an onboard programming sequence you can run without tools, typically involving the door locks and ignition in a specific order. Whether that sequence works on your exact Blazer depends on the trim and how the vehicle is configured. It is worth knowing before you buy a fob online and assume you are set.

1999 Chevrolet Blazer Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Juanamaria, I pulled up to a house where a woman had been dealing with her 1999 Blazer's remote for longer than she wanted to admit. The fob had cracked along the seam, the battery door was half-held on with a strip of tape, and two of the four buttons were only working if you pushed them at just the right angle.

She told me she had already been to the dealer. They quoted her a wait on ordering the part and a labor window that ate up most of a workday. She left without doing it.

I had the replacement housing with me. Swapped the internals into a fresh shell, seated a new CR2032, and tested every button from across the driveway. Clean signal, all four buttons responding, battery door clicking shut the way it should.

The whole thing took less time than her dealer appointment wait. She got her remote back working the same afternoon she called, standing in her own driveway instead of a service waiting room.

Chevrolet Blazer Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to a Chevrolet dealer to get a replacement remote for my 1999 Blazer?▼

No. The 1999 Blazer remote is an older GM system, and a qualified mobile locksmith can handle a replacement at your location. The fob for this truck is a standalone remote, not a push-button-start proximity key, so the process does not require dealer-only access or factory security portals. The right locksmith comes to you, programs the new remote on site, and you are done without a service appointment or a parts order wait.
